Safety and Warnings

This section provides essential safety information for the correct and secure use of the device. It must be read and understood before installation, operation, or maintenance of the equipment.

Intended audience

Only qualified personnel should handle or operate the products or systems described in this documentation.

This documentation is intended for the following audience:

  • Personnel responsible for introducing or commissioning automation devices.
  • Engineers and technicians who design automation systems.
  • Personnel who install, wire, or connect automation equipment.
  • Operators or supervisors who manage and maintain working automation installations.

Disclaimers

  • Weights and Dimensions

Dimensions and weights are nominal and not intended for manufacturing purposes, even when tolerances are indicated.

  • Performance Data

The performance data provided in this manual is for guidance only and does not constitute a warranty. It may reflect results obtained under Industrial Shields test conditions and must be verified by the user for suitability in the actual application. Actual performance is subject to the Industrial Shields Warranty and Limitations of Liability.

  • Errors and Omissions

The information in this documentation has been carefully reviewed and is believed to be accurate. However, Industrial Shields assumes no responsibility for clerical, typographical, or proofreading errors, or for omissions.

Warnings

  • Proper procedures for transport, storage, installation, assembly, operation, and maintenance must be rigorously followed. Deviation from these procedures constitutes improper use and may result in serious damage to the device or system.
  • Permissible ambient conditions specified in the documentation must be respected at all times.
  • The equipment shall not be connected or disconnected when a flammable or combustible atmosphere is present. Failure to observe this instruction may result in fire, explosion, serious injury, or death.
  • All indications, warnings, and safety instructions contained in the associated documentation must be observed.

Installation Guidelines

Industrial Shields devices shall be installed within a suitable enclosure, cabinet, or electrical control room providing adequate protection against electrical, mechanical, and environmental hazards. To ensure safe and reliable operation of the PLC, observe the following installation guidelines:

  • Access to the enclosure, cabinet, or control room shall be restricted to authorised and qualified personnel only.
  • Install the device in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated environment, free from dust, oil mist, conductive particles, corrosive or flammable gases, high temperatures, condensation, and rain.
  • Protect the device from vibration and mechanical shock, which can impair operation and reduce service life.
  • During drilling or wiring, prevent metal shavings or wire fragments from entering the device enclosure to avoid faults, fire, or malfunction.
  • After installation, ensure ventilation ducts are clear to prevent overheating or fire hazards.
  • Do not connect, plug, or unplug cables while the system is powered; this may cause electric shock or equipment damage. Ensure all wiring is secure and reliable.
  • Route low-voltage signal wires and communication cables separately from AC power wiring and high-energy, rapidly-switched DC wiring.
  • Use shielded twisted-pair cables for high-frequency and analog I/O signals to reduce electrical noise.
  • Refer to the device model specific documentation page for detailed wiring instructions.

Failure to comply with these installation requirements may result in severe personal injury, death, or significant property damage. The installer is responsible for ensuring that all applicable safety standards and installation practices are observed.

Safety Instructions for Maintenance Personnel

Adherence to the following procedures is mandatory for personnel performing maintenance activities. Non-compliance may result in severe personal injury, substantial equipment damage, or operational failure.

  1. Module Integrity

Do not disassemble or modify any modules. Unauthorized intervention may cause equipment failure, malfunction, fire, or electric shock.

  2. Electrostatic Discharge Prevention

Before handling any module, personnel must discharge any accumulated electrostatic energy from the human body by touching a suitable grounded conductive object. Failure to observe this precaution may cause module faults or malfunctions.

  3. Electromagnetic Interference Control

Maintain a minimum distance of 25 centimeters in all directions between the device and all types of radio communication devices, including mobile phones and personal handy-phone systems. Failure to observe this precaution may induce module malfunction.

  4. Power Supply

Prior to any action involving connecting or disconnecting a module, the power supply to the entire system must be disconnected on all phases. Failure to observe this precaution may result in module failure or malfunction.

  5. Mechanical Assembly

    • Terminal port screws and connector screws must be tightened to the prescribed torque value as specified in the technical data.
    • Insufficient tightening may lead to loose connections, resulting in operational failure.
    • Excessive tightening may cause damage to the screws and/or the module, potentially leading to component failure, short circuits, or other malfunctions.

Application Considerations

Industrial Shields shall not be responsible for conformity with any codes, regulations or standards that apply to the combination of products in the customer’s application or use of the product.

The following are some examples of applications for which particular attention must be given. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all possible uses of the products, nor is it intended to imply that the uses may be suitable for the products:

  • Systems, machines, and equipment that could present a risk to life or property.
  • Nuclear energy control systems, combustion systems, railroad systems, aviation systems, medical equipment, amusement machines, vehicles, safety equipment, and installation subject to separate industry or government regulations.
  • Outdoor use, uses involving potential chemical contamination or electrical interference, or conditions or uses not described in this document.

At the customer’s request, Industrial Shields will provide applicable third party certification documents identifying ratings and limitations of use that apply to the products. This information by itself is not sufficient for a complete determination of the suitability of the products in combination with the system, machine, end product, or other application or use.

Residual risks

When performing a machine risk assessment in accordance with the EU Machinery Directive, the machine manufacturer must take into account the following residual risks related to the control and drive components of a PDS.

  1. Unintended Movements

Unintentional motion of driven machine components during commissioning, operation, maintenance, or repair may occur due to:

    • Hardware or software faults in sensors, controllers, actuators, or connection systems
    • Delays in controller or drive response times
    • Operating or environmental conditions outside specified limits
    • Condensation or conductive contamination
    • Errors in parameterization, programming, cabling, or installation
    • Use of radio or mobile devices near the controller
    • External influences or physical damage
  2. Extreme Temperatures and Emissions

Exceptional heat, noise, particle, or gas emissions may result from:

    • Component failures
    • Software errors
    • Operating or environmental conditions outside the specified range
    • External impacts or damage
  3. Hazardous Voltages

Dangerous electrical shock voltages may be caused by:

    • Component malfunctions
    • Electrostatic charging
    • Induced voltages in moving motors
    • Operating or environmental conditions beyond the specification
    • Condensation or conductive contamination
    • External influences or damage
  4. Electromagnetic Fields

Electrical, magnetic, or electromagnetic fields generated during operation may pose risks to individuals with pacemakers, implants, or metal prostheses if they are in close proximity.

  5. Environmental Hazards

Improper system operation or unsafe disposal of components may lead to the release of pollutants or harmful emissions.

Waste disposal

Dispose of the device in accordance with local regulations on electronic waste.
